14,000 police chiefs fill Boston hotels

Oct. 16, 2006

BOSTON – Some 14,000 police chiefs and other senior law enforcement officers and civilian employees from around the world filled Boston-area hotels to overflowing this past weekend.  They’ve gathered in Boston for the 113th Annual Conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police

On Saturday, Oct. 14th a standing room only crowd attended a dynamic session called  When the News Hits the Fan: What Chiefs Need to Know About Communicating in a Crisis given by Mark Towhey, founder and president of TOWHEY Consulting Group Inc., an international management consulting firm specializing in integrated issues, risk and crisis leadership.

Officers attending the session learned about global best practices in crisis leadership in both the private and public sectors and how they are transferable to law enforcement applications.  In particular, techniques for working through the information gap that typically occurs at the onset of any crisis and techniques to avoid crises by protecting an agency’s “brand” were particularly well received.  Overall, audience members rated the session as “very high value” and many reported the presentation and the speaker were “fun”, “dynamic” and “extremely knowledgeable.”
